The Awards won by the Yorktown Science Research students
for all competitions in the past are listed below

Congratulations to...

Priya Mohindra
on becoming a Siemens Science Competition Regional Finalist

She was the only student from Westchester and the surrounding areas to win this honor
and was able to present her research on better cancer detection methods
at Carnegie Melon University, in Pittsburgh PA this past November

The Siemens Competition in Math, Science & Technology recognizes remarkable talent early on, fostering individual growth for high school students who are willing to challenge themselves through science research. Through this competition, students have an opportunity to achieve national recognition for science research projects that they complete in high school. It is administered by The College Board funded by the Siemens Foundation.

Brief glimpse into Priya's 3 year research project

Novel Strategies for the PET Imaging of Colorectal Cancer Using the A33 Antibody
In recent years, there has been an increasing drive to develop improved methods of imaging: ones that simplify diagnoses and informed treatment decisions without sacrificing accuracy. Positron Emission Tomography (PET) is a highly sensitive technology that has been considered to be ideal for monitoring molecular events in early stages of diseases as it gives researchers the ability to track the location of imaging agents within the body.  PET scans utilize radiation given off by gamma ray emitters (that are injected into the subject) in order to generate images. In order for PET scans to image cancer accurately, the gamma ray emitters need to be modified in order to enable them to bind specifically to cancer cells. This research explored binding the A33 antibody, which targets colon cancer cells, to radionuclide 89Zr through the use of a chelator in order to form imaging agents that specifically target certain attributes of cells. Through experimentation, the radiolabeling of the A33 antibody was found successful and subsequent tests aimed to characterize the compound in order to gain more information about the stability and binding capabilities of the compound. The results from these experiments demonstrated that the compound is stable up to seven days in an environment comparable to that of humans and that the modification of the A33 antibody with chelators didn’t significantly compromise their ability to bind to colon cancer cells. In addition, imaging with the radiolabeled compounds in mice bearing colon cancer tumors indicated high uptake and localization of the compound in tumors as well as a good tumor-to-nontumor ratio – an important attribute of imaging agents. Through these series of experiments, the radiolabeled A33 antibody compound has been shown to hold much promise in the field of cancer diagnostics.

Thanks also to all of the dedication and guidance given to Priya by her mentors
Dr. Jason Lewis and Dr. Brian Zeglis of the Radiation Department at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in NY

and to

Nithin Santhanam
Who was selected to present his research at the

The 13th International ACM SIGACCESS Conference
on Computers and Accessibility
in Dundee, Scotland this past October.

The ASSETS conference explores the use of computing and information technologies to help persons with disabilities and older adults. ASSETS is the premier forum for presenting innovative research on the design and use of both mainstream and specialized assistive technologies.

Brief glimpse into Nithin's 3 year research project

A significant part of the population with disabilities has difficulty accessing the internet using traditional user input devices to a computer. Commercially available specialized assistive technologies, while useful, are not affordable for many people. The goal of this experiment was to develop a more cost effective alternative solution to utilize the internet.  This involves the use of innovative software components and modification of the popular Wii remote.  The study evaluated the use of this solution on individuals with cerebral palsy to assess its effectiveness against the traditional alternatives in performing various internet tasks.  The results show statistically significant benefits seen as a reduction in the time taken to perform the tasks.  The software components of the solution are publicly available on the internet free of charge for any one to use.   This study demonstrates the potential for inexpensive assistive technology to improve the quality of life of people with disabilities.

Accompanying Nithin was his mentors:
Shari Trewin (Research staff member - IBM), Cal Swart (Senior Technical Staff Member - IBM)
and his father, Peter Santhanam(Senior Manager - IBM)

A few months ago, over 250 students from 30 area high schools in Westchester and Putnam Counties
gathered to present their extensive research projects at the
11th annual Progenics - Regeneron – Acorda Westchester Science and Engineering Fair

Thanks to generous donations by Progenics Pharmaceuticals, Regeneron Pharmaceuticals, and Acorda Therapeutics,
the top 8 individual projects and 4 team projects from WESEF, won an all expense paid trip to compete in
Los Angeles, California at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF), the “superbowl” of science fairs,
(
http://www.societyforscience.org/isef

This is the larger and more global of the two Intel sponsored events (the other being the Intel Science Talent Search).
At the Intel ISEF, more than 1,500 high school student, science fair winners,
from over 50 countries competed for $4 million in prizes and scholarships.

In addition, a few students won the chance to present their research at the International Sustainable Project Olympiad (ISWEEEP).
This International fair is modeled after the Intel ISEF but focuses solely on projects in the Environmental, Engineering and Energy
areas that help us to promote a sustainable world. (www.ISWEEEP.org)

Of the 12 projects from the that won a chance to present in Los Angeles, California at the Intel ISEF,
4 were from the Yorktown High School Science Research Program.

In addition, 2 of the Yorktown projects won a spot to present at the ISWEEEP competition in Houston, Texas.

At the Intel ISEF....

Matthew McIntyre of Yorktown High School won 2nd place in Microbiology ($1500.00) and the U.S. Army Award including a $4000.00 scholarship and a trip to London, England for his work on a
possible solution to the worldwide malaria epidemic by  identifying the genetics of the parasite that causes malaria like diseases that could be targeted by future pharmaceuticals

Michael Cerabona of Yorktown High School won 4th place in Engineering ($500.00) and the
GE Energy Award ($1000.00) for his work in creating a solar cell tracking device that uses a shape memory alloy known as “Muscle Wire” to guide a solar panel to follow the path of the sun.

Priya Mohindra of Yorktown High School and her partner Gabriel Weissmann from Horrace Greeley High School, won 4th place in Biochemistry ($500.00) for their project on early detection of breast cancer by finding a better way to bind a cancer detection chemical to early stage breast cancer cells.

While the team of Amanda Buonagurio of Yorktown High School and her partners, Morgan Blueglass and Elyse Blueglass from Somers High School, did not place this year, their project got a lot of attention from psychological and special needs organizations as it was focused on "Discovering the Keys to a Positive, Lifelong Relationship Between People with Special Needs and Their Nondisabled Siblings"  In fact, their research became a Worldwide study that is currently helping parents and siblings with this challenging relationship  since they presented their findings at the
International Sibling Conference this past summer.

----------------------

and at the  International Sustainable Project Olympiad (www.isweeep.org) in Houston, Texas
600 global science fair winners in the areas of Engineering, Environmental, Energy
competed against each other.

Michael Cerabona from Yorktown High School won a 2nd place award in Engineering ($600) and the Naval research ($50) award for his work in creating a solar cell tracking device that uses a shape memory alloy known as “Muscle Wire” to guide a solar panel to follow the path of the sun.

And

Amanda Cesario  from Yorktown High School won a 2nd place award in Environment ($600) for her work on determining the effect of a potential water purifying plant, Moringa, on removing substances such as E.coli in an effort to make the water drinkable. Her goals was to help people in developing nations that don’t have access to commercial water filtration systems.

and to ......
