Their goal was to design a project that would hopefully help other children. They realized that when a family has a child with special needs, often the majority of their focus is on that child. They were curious about what impact having a sibling with special needs would have on children of different ages and family backgrounds. They consulted with numerous students and adults that have grown up with a sibling with special needs as well as input from many professionals in the field of special education. Their research has been so well received that even Don Meyer (president + founder of www.siblingsupport.org) sent out an email nationwide in support of their efforts.
Their survey, “The Effects of Children with Special Needs on Their ‘Typically’ Developing Siblings” takes a close look at the feelings, beliefs and values of "Typically developing" siblings. They also have included a parent part of the survey in an effort to analyze if there is a correlation between the child's answer and the feelings, beliefs and actions of the parents.
They presented their research at the recent Westchester Science and Engineering Fair and won 1st place and a trip to the Intel International Science Fair in San Jose (in May).
They already have received over 180 surveys and were hoping to receive more within the next few weeks so that they can include your survey in their final analysis of the data. (NOTE: you can mail this and the survey back to 4 Benjamin Green Lane, Mahopac, NY 10541 or fax it to 914 248 9658 – separately from the survey, if you wish to maintain anonymity)
*** A few notes:
- Please encourage anyone participating to complete the survey and send it back by Saturday, April 4th, as we want to be sure to include as many people as possible before we start to do our final analysis of the data.
We are hoping to email you the findings within the next month or two so that you can share them with the families in your group. It was the ultimate goal of Morgan, Elyse and Tyler's to be able to gain enough insight that they can really make a difference by helping the families that live this challenging situation every day.
Thank you.
Thanks again for helping my students to try and make a difference. Please call or email with any questions.
